The Major carpets maintenance guide for synthetic carpets

As long as you follow our tips for care and maintenance, your synthetic carpet should continue to look fabulous and wear well for years to come.

Average cleaning

It is critical to vacuum your carpet thoroughly & frequently, particularly in high traffic areas. Vacuuming not only prolongs the life of the carpet, but also enhances its appearance.

After your carpet has been laid, vacuum lightly & frequently in the first week to remove surface lint, dust & fluff. After that, weekly or whenever necessary to remove soil & grit before it works its way below the surface of the pile where it is far more difficult to remove & can abrade the carpet & dull its appearance.

General hints

Three vacuum passes for light soiled areas will suffice while five to seven passes for heavily soiled areas are necessary.
Vacuuming first against the natural pile direction lifts the pile helping to unsettle & remove dirt & grit while reducing matting. When finishing, vacuum in the direction of the pile to achieve a uniform finish.

To prevent excess fuzzing turn the brush off, or change the head when vacuuming loop pile, cut & loop pile or berber carpet.

Placing door mats at all exterior doorways & entrances to carpeted areas to trap dirt & moisture from shoes.

Rearrange furniture occasionally to alleviate pressure marks & utilize chair pads under desk chairs with castors.

Use rugs in high traffic areas & in front of chairs to prevent wearing.

Maintenance

Depending on usage carpet should be professionally steam cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Shampooing, do-it-yourself steam cleaning or dry cleaning is not recommended.

The Major carpets maintenance guide for real timber floating floor

As long as you follow our tips for care and maintenance, your hardwood timber floor should continue to look fabulous and should wear well for many years to come.

Average cleaning

Wipe up spills promptly with a dry cloth or dry paper towel. For sticky substances, moisten the cloth slightly.

To remove surface dirt and grit, the floor must be regularly vacuumed or swept with an electrostatic mop.

Use only quality floor mops and thoroughly wash new mops to remove any lint remaining from the manufacturing process.

A positive emulsion cleaner made specifically for timber floors should be used as it will remove the dirt without damaging the surface seal.

General hints

Direct sunlight can cause a chemical reaction in the timber causing it to change colour. Move your rugs periodically and protect your floor from direct sunlight with curtains or blinds.

Moving furniture across your floor can lead to damaging the surface. Fit protective pads to the legs of chairs and tables so that they can be moved easily without the risk of spoiling the floor.

To remove ground-in dirt and grit, it is necessary to damp-mop the floor. The amount of water used on a hardwood timber floor must be kept to a minimum. Over-wetting your floor when mopping can change the moisture balance and cause your floor to expand. In some cases this may result in cupping.

The best hint to maintaining a newer floor for longer is to adopt a ‘no shoes’ policy. This therefore eliminates the possibility that dirt and stones are going to be walked through your house and potentially scratch the floor.

Maintenance

Dirt and grit lead to excess wear and scratching of your floor. Using dirt trapping mats at all exterior doors help minimise the amount of dirt, sand and grit that makes it onto your floor.

Provide mats to all doorways leading from outside. This will reduce the amount of dirt that get’s walked inside. Small stones and dirt that gets caught in shoes can permanently scratch the floor. A regular sweep of all traffic areas is highly recommended.

Under no circumstances should you use household detergents or polishes on your hardwood timber floor as these may contain harsh chemicals that can damage the finish or hamper refinishing if required.

The Major carpets maintenance guide for laminate flooring

As long as you follow our tips for care and maintenance, your laminate flooring should continue to look fabulous and you’ll find the low maintenance of a laminate floor a huge plus.

Average cleaning

All your floor should require is a vacuum or wipe over with a broom or anti-static dust mop for the best results.

The initial cleaning of your floor will need vacuuming thoroughly, then between two and three good mop-over’s with a lightly dampened mop – not a squeeze sponge mop – with warm water to remove any dust that may be present from when your floor was first installed.

General hints

After the initial clean, your floor should only need to be swept, apart from the odd occasion when a more thorough clean will be beneficial. Note that mopped means that when the need arises, wiping over the floor with a slightly dampened dust mop, cloth or a recommended cleaning kit.

Excess water on the floor may eventually lead to damage which will not be covered by manufacturers’ warranty.

Never use a steam mop.

Maintenance

Dirt and grit lead to excess wear and scratching of your floor. Using dirt trapping mats at all exterior doors help minimise the amount of dirt, sand and grit that makes it onto your floor.
